Response Journal - HAMLET

Response Journal for Act 1, Scene 1 to Act 1, Scene 5

1. How does the play make you feel at this point?

At this point of the play, I feel that Hamlet is a very unique and interesting story. It gives a sense of attachment to my thinking. Hamlet makes me feel like he's an unexpected character in the story because of his erratic behavior after his father's death and after he saw the king ghost. I always have a feeling that it will be just a normal boring story because it's antique and written by Shakespeare. But I was wrong because I never read Shakespeare's story before, Hamlet is just exciting and dubious for me to follow along.

2. In what situations have you felt similar to the characters? What persons, places, or ideas from your own experiences came to your mind while you were reading this portion of the play?

a. I felt similar to rumor situation that I always have a false rumor. I believe in some of the  rumors but sometimes it just wrong because it isn't the truth that have been confirmed. From the play, they spread the rumor about the ghost and some characters didn't believe in it at first, such as Hamlet, then Hamlet saw it by himself. I need to know that it's true and I need to prove it whether to make me believe.

b. I think I connected to Hamlet the most in the play because I would be in the same situation as him if I know that my own uncle killed my father to seize the throne. I would be very revengeful but not as much as Hamlet though. I would use another way to ruin his life and make him feel the pain; torture him bit by bit. Everyone would feel disgust if their own mother re-married with their own uncle, same as me here and Hamlet.

c. From my own experience, I felt that Horatio is the most trust-able friend. Like my friend, she can be trust-able and she's my best and good friend. Sometimes I think that she will forget the work but no; she always finish the work on time. When I told her the secret, she will keep it until I tell her that it can be reveal.

3. What portions of Shakespeare’s language attracts your attention? These might be individual words, phrases, lines, scenes, or images.

I think it would be a lot of words because there are many of the old writing language such as say'st, hic et ubique, O'ermaster't ,and etc. It may be because of the unknown language that I didn't know so it attracts my attention to the words. Some words I can't read nor understand it but it seems to be very elegant and charming.

4. Make note of any portion of the play, its language, or events that cause you problems.

As I answered in the third question, some words are just hard to understand because of its antique language. Some conversations seem to disturb me very much because I don't understand, it seems to be so poetry even though it's not. The play that cause me the problems would be the ghost part because it seems to be impossible for the ghost to know the cause of their own death. (Every movies that I watched, the ghost can't remember the cause so they still stay in the world, Caution; Reader discretion is strongly advised).

Spectator Sport: Sweet starry night

It's already dark after the warm sunset. The dim light bulbs dangling all over the place make it feel so cozy. The shops are categorically differentiate. They start to turn on their light’s banner. The place is crowd with people. Every shop has long line of queuing; they look all tired for waiting in the line, they all sweat and bustling to each other. The smell of food scatters around. I can smell other people sweat mingle with the savory food while I go through the people. The shop that I go through is takoyaki shop, smell of fried octopus in the sweet and richly scented of the flour with their luscious sauce. People who gather there, their pupils are dilate with shimmer.
The more I get closer to the shop the stronger smell it takes. All the stuffy smell of other people clothes is gone. I smell the sweet creamy bakery from the opposite side of takoyaki shop. I proceed to the opposite side. There are not much people in front of the bakery, so I line up behind a woman with a cross-heart tattoo on her arm. There are a lot of games booths are behind the bakery shop: the shooting sound of the plastic gun popping out, the bursting of the balloon has been shot and the chatter of people who talking about the prizes that they might get. “What do you want for your sweets?”I point at a key lime pie as I look around. The baker grab a key lime pie from the display fridge, I can only feel the soft breeze from that fridge. She wraps it in the perfectly-folded flamboyant box and put it in the plastic bag as she hand it to me. The smell is not intense; it’s just a sweet lime scent from the little box. Looking through the overwhelming people for the spot to eat a key lime pie. Then I see the exactly right spot to eat, not near the trash bin and any trees for the disturbance. The bench is squeaking and old-looking but it gives me a mellow feeling. I open the cake’s box and drop the plastic bag on the bench beside me. I scoop the first bite; it’s amazingly yummy; the sour taste of lime, sweet creamy of cream cheese and crunchy of the brittle pie.
It almost late at night but people are still here. The smiles on their faces are like the face after the great dinners. I eat the last bite of a cake then I throw the trash in the big black bin not far away from the bench. A woman with a cross-heart tattoo is still near the shop waiting for someone. And a man runs to her, saying “I'M SO SORRY!”. He's abit aggrandize about it. She smile back to a man and says “Never mind! It’s only 5 minutes late” They are fine as they hold one’s hands and walk to the games booths. I look up into the dark sky with a lot of stars, they are dazzling and flashing wink. It’s shining, charming, and sparkling.
